On a beautiful Thursday morning, August 19^th, 2010, USNAAA SD Chapter members visited Commander Naval Beach Group One located on Amphibious Base, Coronado CA. To start the visit, CDR Colvert Burgos ’93 provided Chapter members an overview of the Command’s Mission, Capabilities, Personnel and Equipment. Naval Beach Group ONE is part of the Naval Surface Warfare community and reports the RDML Earl Gay ’80, Expeditionary Strike Group Three. Naval Beach Group ONE performs the following missions: Assault Echelon, Maritime Prepositioning Force Operations, Assault Follow-on Echelon and LOTS / JLOTS, NSE Support of ARG/MEU Deployments and Rear Echelon Force support. Upon completion of the Command overview briefing, Chapter members were treated to a live Naval Amphibious Training mission conducted on Coronado beach. The highlight on the training exercise was the opportunity for Chapter members to see two Navy Landing Craft Air Cushion (LCAC) vessel land on the beach with their trucks and cargo. After the trucks and cargo were off-loaded, Chapter members were given the opportunity to meet and speak with crew members of the LCAC crafts.

The Chapter wants to thank Commander Naval Beach Group ONE for a fabulous visit. A special thanks and recognition go to CDR Colvert Burgos ’93 and CDR Todd Perry ’91, for coordinating the event and providing our Chapter members a great opportunity to see our warfighters in action! RADM Michael Bachmann ‘74, Commander SPAWAR, gave a great presentation about the SPAWAR command, its global and interagency spread and its extensive range of activities. For your webmaster, who remembers when RADM George Wagner ‘62 brought the command to San Diego against a host of opposition, it was eye-opening. Alumni, Mids and friends gathered at the Anchors Hall of Fame Room just a few feet from the gates of NAVSTA San Diego to hear CAPT Ricky Williamson ’85, CO of NAVSTA SD, give a great briefing on what it really takes to make the NAVSTA a home and work space for countless sailors. Williamson shared both insights and information on the history of the Naval Station, it’s current state, and it’s future as San Diego becomes the key port on the West Coast for the Navy. Covering everything from parking problems to how a CO maintains a sprawling base with only 10 actual full time sailors Williamson gave the assembled group a firsthand look at the daily rigors of running one of the largest naval installations on the West Coast. Attendees spanned the generations with our senior alumni being George Pavis ’46 and junior being MIDN 3c Sam Cervantes, home on summer leave from the Academy.

Plebe Recognition Dinner ReCap

There were about 150 people attending to recognize the new members of the Class of 2014 and 2015. The Class of 1964 was present in force and seated at each table to provide another ‘Link in the Chain’. Myron presented the new plebes. Cap Pinney made a short presentation about the Class of 1964. The pictures included here show most of the attendees and a group picture of the new plebes. You can click on an image to see a larger version.

RADM Thomas Rowden ‘82, Commander Carrier Strike Group SEVEN, gave a very interesting presentation about the current navy-to-navy relationship between the ROK and the US and the state of the alliance between our two countries now and in the future.

Casino Night Cruise ReCap

On Saturday February 20th, 2010, the Chapter held its “Dark Ages” Casino Night event aboard the California Princess. 100 Chapter members, friends and Parents Club representatives participated in a festive cruise of San Diego Harbor. The cruise included food, spirits, friendship, your luck at Black Jack and many prizes. Thanks to all who participated and made our Casino Night event a resounding success!

Our January Luncheon at Tom Ham’s featured VADM Jeff Fowler ‘78 (Superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy) and Byron Marchant ‘78 (President of the USNA Alumni Association). We had one of our best ever attendance as you can see in the photos below.
