The speaker was RADM Gar Wright ‘77 who spoke about his Iraq Experience as Commander, JTF 134, responsible for all Iraq detainees. The subject was titled: Counterinsurgency (COIN) Operations: “Winning the “Battlefield of the Mind”.
He talked about the strategy they used at JTF-134 (Detention Operations) to separate Extremists from Moderates, and empower the Moderates to defeat the insurgency. This approach was way out in front of conventional doctrine – - and established a successful framework for future COIN operations. The non-kinetic fight that is going on every day in Iraq is be especially interesting. It is very important to get this right.
This first-hand account of how things can be dome to get desired results is not the stuff that we read about in newspapers, but is very important for people to know. His details and statistics were truly surprising and rewarding to hear.
